Apples are on the menu!

This week I was inspired by the red delicious apples that I saw at our local Harris Teeter grocery store. For some reason they jumped out at me and I had to paint them.

So far I have done three small, 6"x6" oil on panel paintings of these juicy apples. I likely have a couple more in me before the apples lose their luscious, shiny glow.

What do do you think so far? Leave me a comment!

Finally focusing on figure drawing!

For years I have been intimidated by drawing the human figure. It is the most intimidating subject one can face because every human knows exactly what the figure should look like. It is extremely easy to notice an eye out of place, a head too big, shoulders too narrow, hands too small, etc. -- it isn't like if you saw a drawing of an apple you would notice that the spot is wrong, the stem too long or the shadow the wrong shape. It simply would look like an apple. But the figure, that's different.

So, a few weeks ago, I decided to get over this fear and jump in with both feet. I joined a weekly life drawing group (not instructional) and got my tools together and went for it. And you know what? It is FUN! I'm not very good yet, but I am focusing hard, trying to practice smart and go in with the intention to improve each week. I have noticed that I like the images when I keep the values lighter by using harder pencils. The two drawings of the men are garish in my opinion. So, watch for me to continue playing with the harder pencils, rather than he charcoals.

Here are are my drawings - oldest drawing first.

I've started a VLOG!!

I have taken the plunge. I am now sharing more about myself, my process and my art than ever before.  I am now 5 episodes in and I think it is going well.

In each episode I cover a day in my life. These days are centered around my time in the studio, but also give you a glimpse into the life of someone who has to balance his art career, his professional path, his 'side-hustle', and a family with five kids.  It is one crazy ride that is now being documented on YouTube.

I have included my latest episode here on the right, but jump over to http://www.youtube.com/adambreakey75 to get caught up on all of the episodes and to subscribe so you don't miss out on the new episodes!

The new studio!

It is official.  I now have a new studio outside of my home!  This new studio is a great space that is not far from home, and very close to my daughter's school.  I am sharing the studio with a good friend and awesome artist - Jason Clark.

I am planning to use this studio 3-4 times per week mainly focused on oil painting, and often working on pieces that are too big to work on in my home studio.  I currently have three large paintings planned/promised/commissioned with more to follow.

This new studio is located in Apex, NC, just off of highway 64 -- and it is right next to a brewery!  Is that a bad idea, or a good idea???

There will be studio open houses, and evening events coming soon.  I also plan to offer some lessons in the space as well, so stay tuned for that.

Exciting times ahead!
